The breed gained popularity in the 19th century, and nowadays, it is very popular in all parts of the world. These dogs are famous for their saucy countenance and merry temperament, and they are quite easy to care for. The dogs require regular grooming and bathing, but if they don’t go out, bathing is unnecessary. A good balanced diet is important for the dogs, but never give them poultry or rabbit bones, because they are dangerous, and avoid overfeeding.

This breed makes perfect lap dogs; they are very intelligent and loyal, require little place and are happy with little exercises. The doggy smell is absent in this breed, but they shed a lot twice a year, especially the longhaired type. There is much controversy about the origin of the breed, but they are believed to have descended from ancient dogs of Aztecs and Toltecs, who had similar appearance and who were involved in ancient rituals.
