These are the world’s smallest dogs, measuring 6-9 inches high at the shoulder. Due to their portable size and easy maintenance, they are popular among elderly people and can be excellent therapy dogs. They have fragile bones, and hence they require very careful handling. They are not recommended for children under six. The head is apple-shaped, and the eyes are large and luminous dark. The muzzle is pointed, and the ears are large and flaring to the sides at a 45-degree angle. The limbs are straight, the feet are small and dainty and the sickle-shaped tail is carried over the back.

According to the AKC breed standard, there are two types of these dogs and the differentiation is based on the coat length. In both types the coat should be of soft texture, either flat or slightly curly, with undercoat preferred. Feathering on feet and legs and large ruff on the neck is preferred in both types. As for the color, any coat color and pattern is permissible, but solid light colors are preferable. Eye and nose coloring should match the coat.
