Chihuahuas that are sold in pet stores can be of poor type and poorly bred. Quite often mixed breeds are sold, and a person who is not an expert in dog breeds can hardly see it. Pet stores put a certain percentage on the price of the puppies and the final price can turn out to be higher compared to that of a reputable breeder.

Puppies in pet stores mainly come from puppy mills or backyard breeders. This means that the parents of the puppies being sold may be not of breeding quality. Pet store pups are not socialized and not tested for dangerous genetic defects. As you do not have a chance to evaluate the pup's family, it is hard to say what the puppy will be like as an adult dog.

Buying a Chihuahua from pet stores means supporting irresponsible breeding. Backyard breeders and puppy millers tend to work with very large numbers of dogs. The dogs are kept for producing and consequently bringing profit. It is sad to state, but the puppy mill dogs live in terrible conditions. Try to find a more reliable source to buy Chihuahuas from.

Buying a puppy should be taken seriously and responsibly. Registration papers, pedigree, and medical certificates should be examined before making the final decision on purchasing a puppy. Chihuahuas can have some health problems in their line and obtaining information on the health issues of the breed is a must for a prospective owner.
